It was moderately dark in the room, I think I was using only a small lamp to light her a bit so that the camera would focus, and the light in the moment of the exposure is from the on-camera flash bounced in the ceiling

the eyes adapt over a period of time to light, that's why the flash doesn't make the pupils smaller, so it's all in the ambient light
